IFSU Advances Toward Industrialization as the First Metal and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) in the Cordillera Region

IFSU and DOST held its groundbreaking ceremony of 1st MEIC in CAR at the Ifugao State University (IFSU) Lagawe campus on June 16, 2021 at IFSU-Lagawe Campus.

In the message of the DOST-CAR Regional Director Nancy Bantog represented by Engineer Max Codamon of DOST-Ifugao, she said that MEIC will serve as a platform for technology generation, technology transfer, and technical competency development. MEIC is a mechanism to bring science, technology, and innovation to the countryside,” Recognizing this development challenge, DOST-CAR funded this bigger innovative project.

Furthermore, IFSU President Eva Marie Codamon-Dugyon acknowledged DOST for its central direction, leadership, and support to all scientific and technological endeavors. She assured that IFSU shall allow the use of MEIC for promotion training, technology demonstration, and related activities for the metals and engineering sector in the Cordilleras.

The establishment of MEIC according to the Memorandum of Agreement signed by IFSU, MIRDC and DOST-CAR shall serve as an avenue for the conduct of research and development and to develop and strengthen the capability of the manpower resource of both students and faculty members of the institution. On February 02, 2023, the DOST-MIRDC led by Dr. Agustin M. Fudolig, Deputy Executive Director for Research and Development and Project Leader, and his team visited the MEIC to discuss concerns regarding the optimal utilization of the center's equipment. The center is a product of a tri-party agreement among IFSU, DOST-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and DOST-MIRDC. It serves as an avenue for the conduct of research and to develop and strengthen the capabilities of the institution's human resources, including students and faculty. Irene Aspiras, IFSU - Lagawe

One of the mandates of MEIC is to provide trainings to beneficiaries in the engineering field. On March 10, 2023, the DOST-MIRDC successfully concluded the five-day training on Solidworks, a computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software application primarily used for 3D modeling and designing products in various industries.

Engineer Joseph Mark M. Riberta Jr., Science Research Specialist I, who served as the trainer, explained that the purpose of the training was to equip the participants with skills on the utilization of Solidworks, enabling them to successfully finalize designs for Research and Development (R&D) projects and research initiatives. Moreover, students from the The College of Engineering and Technology (CET) also attended the said training.

The IFSU MEIC, under its initiative 'IFSU MEIC Fabrication of Agri-Machineries,' delivered the fabricated corn mill to the Banawol Panghalan Irrigators Association, Inc. in Barangay Caba, Lagawe. The purpose was to subject it to testing and evaluation, with the potential for further enhancements, before the formal handover as a technological transfer to the organization. Engr. Dahlia Gay Bunolna, who led the project, was joined by researcher Engr. Cyrus Camhit and fabricator Mr. Thomas Sawey in personally delivering the corn mill to the mentioned barangay. Mr. Oscar Baloc, the president of the organization, and Mr. Jonathan Tuguinay, the Barangay Official Representative, enthusiastically participated in the corn mill's testing. The project’s goal is to showcase excellence in providing innovative engineering solutions aimed at contributing to the economic recovery of Ifugao Province.
