IFSU Lib reads stories of hope to school children

“Kayat mi iti agdengngeg ken istorya (We love to listen and read stories),” a delighted grade 6 pupil said during the Outreach Program of the Ifugao State University (IFSU) Library and College of Education at Mabatobato Elementary School on June 28, 2019.

In its efforts to institutionalize its Outreach Program, the IFSU Library regularly conducts series of activities to introduce and inculcate the value and joy of reading and storytelling. Mabatobato Elementary School (MES), Lamut, Ifugao is one of the chosen schools for the IFSU Library Outreach Program.

The IFSU Library Outreach Program primarily aims to provide children books on literature, science, math, and other reading materials for elementary schools. Aside from this, the Outreach Program also assists in the construction of mini libraries for children.

“Libraries are vital learning spaces in a school and community. It is one of the few places in a school for children to embrace the love for reading,” said Dr. Liza M. Tamargo, Director for IFSU Library Services.

She added that, “It is our hope that by sharing children’s books and assisting the construction of the MES mini library, more children will spend their free time reading and learning new things. It is also our way to introduce the importance of libraries to our children.”

Frances Tuguinay, IFSU Library staff said that storytelling is one of the activities that can instill the importance of reading while inculcating values to young children. “It is our joy to read children’s stories to school children. It is fulfilling and feels great to be in the sea of young minds,” added Tuguinay.

Aside from storytelling to all the grade levels during the Outreach Program, the IFSU Library also distributed rain coats and umbrellas; and conducted a feeding program.

The Outreach Program is strongly supported by the International Federation of Samahang Ilocano Incorporated through the initiatives of Joel Mhar Almazan and Elvira J. Ramos of Canada and Hongkong chapters under the leadership of Engr. Danilo Ramos.#
