Student-research congress features 31 researches, 8 best papers


Ifugao State University (IFSU) student researchers presented 31 studies while eight ( 8 ) were recognized as best research papers during the Student Research Congress on November 9, 2022, at Heritage Convention Hall, Lamut campus.

Organized by the Students' Publication Section under the Department of Student Services and Development (DSSD) in partnership with the Department of Research and Development, the event aimed to showcase and share the careful ideas and innovation of student researchers in their pursuit of valuable information and understanding of existing knowledge in the community.

The presented researchers consisted of nine studies in Criminal Justice; eight each in Teacher and Advanced Education and Psychology and; six in Health.

Experts from Saint Mary’s University, Nueva Vizcaya State University, and internal evaluators from IFSU served as the panel of evaluators.

Ms. Desiree S. Ballitoc, DSSD Director, acknowledged the pool of student researchers and enthusiasts. Launched in 2019, Dir. Ballitoc said that the comeback of the University research congress opens new doors of opportunities for student researchers and enthusiasts.

“We see this event not only meeting 2 (two) purposes with one stone but three (3) targets instead. And, these are providing opportunities for student researches to be presented in a forum; access for choosing outstanding student researches for publication in the IFSU Research Journal and other journals, and; developing and producing research-oriented students and alumni,” stated Dir. Ballitoc.

University President Dr. Eva Marie Codamon-Dugyon represented by Dr. Marissa P. Bulong, Vice President for Research, Development, Extension, and Training shared that the research congress serves as a platform for student researchers and enthusiasts to introduce, present, and reexamine their research outputs based on the inputs of the panel of experts.

“As advocates of the scholarly pursuit in our respective institutions, we can make significant contributions to knowledge building. This congress endeavors to highlight the vital role of University research in responding to various aspects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” Dr. Bulong said.

Evaluators were Mr. Luther F. Castillo, Dr. Jordan Mariano, and Mr. Ivan Leonardo T. Melana (Criminal Justice Education); Dr. Jomar J. Baliton, Mr. Aiken Dale Magaya, and Ms. Jennifer Madonna G. Dait (Health); Dr. Florence N. Bahni, Dr. Leo I. Cabautan, and Dr. Michelle Dulay(Psychology); Mr. Kenneth Maslang, Dr. Generose S. Ognayon, and Dr. Eilene B. Bugnay (Teacher Education and Advanced Education).

The criteria for judging both the manuscript and presentation included Research and Theoretical Framing (30%); Adequacy and efficiency of design and procedures/methodology and analysis (30%); Discussion, Conclusion, and Recommendations (30%), and; Presentation (10%).

Based on the criteria, four (4) are adjudged as the best paper, and two (2) are placed second and third.

The research paper entitled “Licensure Examination: Preparations and Experiences of Aspiring Criminologists” by A.B. Hawate, R.D. Dulnuan, S.B. Duma-an, J.G. Guimangal, S.B Gumuwang, C.H Licyayo, C.H. Linnom, D.B. Lunag, M.B. Malagda, and Dr. Janice P. Milo bagged the best paper award in the Criminal Justice Education related researches.

Likewise, the same award was presented to Precious Joy Agustin, Ellein Mae Baloc, Kristal Ann Butalla, Irene A. Delos Reyes, Jovelyn Domingo, Genevieve Dulawan, Hezlyne Joy Dulnuan, Louriz Ngannoy, Elsa Pallay and Mr. Melana with their research paper entitled “Electronic Learning and Adversity Quotient of Student Nurses at Ifugao State University” in Health-related research category.

The research paper entitled “Social Media Life: Ifugao Senior High School Students’ Mental Health and Well-being” by Arthur B. Dadi, Jr., Sarah Daulayan, Myrine Tacio, Michelle Cupe, Femane Canduya, Kenjie Lagayan, Margie Mayam-o, Maileen Pamalo, Zyra Cadingpal, Davie Guinaob, and Dr. Lilian Tumapang won the same award in the Psychology related research category.

In Teacher and Advanced Education related researches category, the research titled “Fish-Fleshing Technique in Advancing Students’ Reading Comprehension” by Smith Bulkman Manzano, Aireen Guinongo, Caryl Calyaen, Dr. Marites Bumidang, Ms. Lorelie Wasin, and Mr. Andres Kiaki hailed as the best paper.

Meanwhile, two (2) researches entitled “Within the Realms of Uncertainties: Phenomenolizing the Life Experiences of Covid-19 Survivors” by researchers Anthoinette Bubod, Jessa Muriel Calatan, Sarah Lunag, Zera Nacod-am, and Dr. Donato A. Abaya and “Exploring the Teaching-Learning Challenges experience by English Teachers with Students” by Moreno B. Malingay, Jr., Aser N. Buhle, Edelle Grace D. Kimayong, and Dr. Bumidang landed second.

Another two (2) papers entitled “Psychosocial Well-Being and Academic Performance of IFSU Students during Covid-19 Pandemic from the School Year 2020-2021” by Rexton Angiwan, Jr., Cherry Ann Baguilat, Chelsea Bah-yad, Zyril Pablea Batoc, Raizael Mae Bayangan, Marcialyn Bulao, Jenebeve Buling, Genny Dumalilis, Michelle Hullana, and Mr. Jay-ar Fernandez and “Local Micro-Enterprises versus Covid-19: Documenting Impacts toward Enhancing Social Studies Education” by Elijah Joy Cumilang, Janice Tayaban and Mr. Castillo placed third.

Student researchers will receive a cash award of Php 5,000, Php 3,500, Php 2,500, and Certificates of Recognition for the Best Paper, second, and third research papers.

Student researchers expressed their gratitude to the panel of evaluators for giving them valuable recommendations for the enhancement of their outputs.
